Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Webster Bank and Webster Financial Corporation

James C. Smith is chairman and chief executive officer of Webster Financial Corporation (NYSE:WBS) and Webster Bank (National Association).


He was elected president of Webster Bank in 1982 and named chief executive officer of the Bank and its holding company, Webster Financial Corporation, in 1987, upon the retirement of his father, Harold Webster Smith, who founded the Bank in 1935. He succeeded his father as chairman in 1995.

Under Smith’s stewardship, Webster has broadened its business lines and expanded its franchise through internal growth and acquisitions. Webster is a full-service commercial bank with over $17 billion in assets. Based in Connecticut and serving its customers through more than 180 banking offices in four states, Webster helps individuals, families and businesses achieve their financial goals. Webster provides retail and commercial banking, consumer finance and financial planning and trust and investment services.

Smith is a member of the board of directors of the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston and was a member of the Federal Advisory Council, which advises the deliberations of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors, from 2004 to 2007. He is a member of the executive committee of the Connecticut Bankers Association, co-chairman of the American Bankers Council, and a member of the Financial Services Roundtable in Washington, D.C. He is a past member of the board of directors of the American Bankers Association and of the Federal Home Loan Bank of Boston, serving as chair of the finance committee. He served as a member of the board of MacDermid, Inc., (NYSE: MRD, until 2007) from 1994 to 2007.

Smith is actively involved in the communities Webster serves, including various leadership roles for the United Way and other civic organizations. He is a member of the boards of directors of Waterbury, Conn.-based Saint Mary’s Hospital and the Palace Theater, where he served as Chairman from 2002 to 2005.

Smith, a native of Waterbury, earned a bachelor’s degree from Dartmouth College.
